This piece, like all of my work, is rich in symbolism. The heliocentric Sunflower dominates the botanical crown of the woman, reminding us to always follow the warmth and light of the Sun. A ladybug represents the feminine aspects of fertility and re-birth. The cardinal is a spiritual guide from our ancestors. The snake wrapping all about her head reminds us of the harshness with which women were judged with since the beginning of time. Also, let us not be remiss in the symbolic shedding of the snakeskin, reminding us to leave behind the old, and embrace the new.
I used the most light absorbing black paint available to me in the background of this piece. I wanted to reinforce that we will shine though even the darkest of times.
